El Día Internacional del Orgullo Gay se conmemora cada 28 de junio; esta lucha surgió debido a los disturbios que generó una mujer transexual en 1969 debido a los reclamos que hacía a la sociedad por ser perseguidos, mutilados, encarcelados y hasta asesinados en todo el mundo por esta razón.
No fue sino hasta mayo de 1990 que la Organización Mundial de la Salud decidió retirar la homosexualidad de su lista de enfermedades mentales.
A pesar de lo que muchos piensas, el heavy metal no es un género exclusivo de hombres y mujeres heterosexuales, pues varios iconos de este género se consideran abiertamente parte de la comunidad LGBT. ¿Quieres saber quiénes son? Aquí te dejamos un lista.
Rob Halford
Halford es especialmente conocido por ser el vocalista principal de la banda británica de heavy metal Judas Priest.
Es considerado por los seguidores del género como uno de los mejores y más influyentes cantantes de la historia del metal.
En 1998, Rob Halford hizo pública su homosexualidad en una entrevista con MTV News:
«Creo que la mayoría de la gente sabe que he sido un hombre gay toda mi vida, y que solo he pasado en los últimos tiempos es un tema con el que me siento cómodo en dirigirme (…) para hacer frente a algo que me parece tiene un momento, y este es el momento para discutirlo».
Sobre el tema, Rob ha declarado en el presente:
«Todavía tenemos un largo camino por recorrer en términos de igualdad y aceptación, pero las cosas grandes nunca suceden de la noche a la mañana. Así que todavía tenemos un largo viaje por hacer. Pero nunca dejaré de hablar de este tema porque es importante para mí y para otras muchas personas «.
OTEP
Otep Shamaya es la líder de la banda estadounidense de metal alternativo y metal experimental OTEP, formada en el año 2000.
Shamaya no le prestó mucha atención a ser mujer o lesbiana en el género hasta que la gente se lo planteó cuando notaron que su novia la acompañaba mientras realizaba una gira en el Ozzfest a principios de la década de 2000.
“Siempre soy consciente de que la gente me mira a mí ya quien quiera que esté de manera diferente. Creo que eso es algo que la comunidad heterosexual da por sentado ”, dice. «Mi banda son todos hombres heterosexuales que amo mucho, pero no lo piensan dos veces antes de caminar afuera tomados de la mano de su novia, mientras que yo lo hago».
Asimismo, escribió la canción «Equal Rights, Equal Lefts» (del álbum Generation Doom de 2016 ), que llama a la comunidad LGBTQ a unirse como entidad votante, y habló sobre la situación en Chechenia, donde han surgido informes de detenciones, encarcelamientos y golpizas de hombres homosexuales.
Paul Masvidal y Sean Reinert
Paul Alberto Masvidal es un guitarrista, compositor y cantante puertorriqueño, es mejor conocido como fundador de la banda de metal progresivo Cynic.
Con elementos de death metal, rock y jazz fusion, Cynic fue formada en Miami, Florida, EE. UU. en noviembre de 1987; disuelta en el invierno de 1994 y reformada en 2007.
Sean Reinert fue un músico, compositor y baterista estadounidense de Æon Spoke . También fue el baterista y miembro fundador de Cynic , hasta que dejó la banda en septiembre de 2015.
Reinert falleció el 24 de enero de 2020 por la noche tras ser encontrado inconsciente en su casa de California. No se conocen las causas de su muerte.
Paul Masvidal y Sean Reinert integrantes de CYNIC hablaron abiertamente por primera vez sobre su sexualidad en una entrevista a Los Angeles Times.
Masvidal de 43 años, reveló en 1991 su homosexualidad y que asistía a bares drag y clubes nocturnos gays mientras estaba de gira, le dijo a Los Angeles Times.
Reinert de 42 años, a quien le tomó un poco más de tiempo salir del closet, dijo:
«Yo lo sabia, secretamente quería ir a esos clubes también. Pero en esos tiempos, mi estereotipo de como ser gay era vestir trajes y camisetas. No tenia ningún referente masculino metal que sea gay.»
Reinert añadió: «Gays hay en todo lado, desempeñando cada trabajo, tocando cada tipo de música, y nosotros siempre lo hemos sido. Me ha tomado años finalmente tener el coraje de decir, «Si tienes algún problema con eso, entonces bota nuestros discos. Ese es tu problema, no el mío.»
Gaahl
Kristian Eivind Espedal ,más conocido como Gaahl, es un vocalista noruego que formó parte de la banda de black metal noruega Gorgoroth, a la cual se unió en 1998.
Gaahl fue sentenciado a un año de prisión por palizas y amenazas de muerte en 2001, y fue forzado a pagar 158,000 NOK (corona, unidad monetaria de Noruega. Normalmente se abrevia como kr).
En 2006, Gaahl fue condenado otros 14 meses más en prisión por torturar a un hombre y beberse parte de su sangre en 2002.
La víctima recibió un total de 190,000 NOK. Se trataba de un hombre de 41 años de edad al cual Gaahl golpeó y amenazó con beber su sangre, cosa que más tarde hizo.
Gaahl se vio envuelto en investigaciones por parte de la policía noruega por una serie de quema de iglesias a principios de los 90. Algo en lo que Gaahl pone mucho énfasis apoyando este tipo de acciones. Gaahl fue liberado en diciembre de 2006.
El 2005, en el documental Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey, fue entrevistado realizando comentarios referentes a la quema de iglesias realizada en Noruega a principios de la década de los 90 y su postura sobre el satanismo y la cristiandad, donde declaró:
«La quema de iglesias y todas esas cosas son, obviamente, cosas que yo apoyo al 100% y que debieron ser llevadas a cabo mucho más en el pasado y que serán realizadas mucho más en el futuro.
Tenemos que acabar con el rastro que la cristiandad ha dejado y lo que las raíces semitas tienen que ofrecer a este mundo.
El satanismo es libertad para el crecimiento del individuo y para convertirse en un súper hombre.
Todo hombre que ha nacido para ser rey, acaba convirtiéndose en rey, todo hombre nacido para ser esclavo no conoce a Satán».
En 2008 habló abiertamente sobre su homosexualidad en una entrevista, algo que a la comunidad del black metal no le cayó muy bien. Robin Jakobsen, su pareja recibió amenazas de muerte.
Por ptra parte, la comunidad gay de Bergen, ciudad natal de Gaahl, lo nombró el “homosexual del año” a lo que este respondió que no necesitaba premios para ser él mismo.
A pesar de esto, fue a recoger su reconocimiento para animar a otros a descubrir su orientación sexual de manera abierta.
“No necesito un premio para ser yo mismo. Pero si esto puede ayudar a otras personas de la misma forma que a mí, es algo positivo”, dijo Gaahl al perdiodico local Bergensavisen.
Roddy Bottum
Roddy Bottum es un músico estadounidense, más conocido como el tecladista de la banda Faith No More, y actualmente el líder de Imperial Teen.
Bottum se declaró homosexual en 1993. Es reconocido y admirado por la juventud gay melómana y metalera.
«No quería que la prensa sensacionalista hablara de que yo era gay como si fuera algo de lo que avergonzarme, o algo que había estado ocultando.
En lo que respecta al rock’n’roll, todavía existe el escenario heterosexual estereotipado de las adolescentes que se enamoran de los héroes de la guitarra machistas. Pero hay tanto enamoramiento homosexual en la música rock como heterosexual: ya es hora de que se reconozca.»
Bottum reconoce que en su adolescencia jamás pensó que llegaría a convertirse en el tecladista de una banda que en algún momento sería considerada como heavy metal o hard rock.
El 6 de septiembre de 2008, Roddy se casó con el cineasta Shrader Thomas en una ceremonia de Los Angeles.
Aunque ese mismo año la Prop 8 prohibió el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo en California, Roddy y Shrader todavía están legalmente casados porque su boda ocurrió durante la ventana en la cual era legal.
“Pienso en ser abiertamente gay como una declaración política. Algo que, de alguna manera, promueve el movimiento por los derechos de los homosexuales ”.
“Creo que seré un modelo a seguir muy positivo. No me preocupa todo el tema de la sexualidad. No voy a tratarlo como un gran problema. Ser gay es algo muy casual para mí, y creo que es importante que los niños tengan en cuenta que deben estar orgullosos de ello «.
Doug Pinnick
Douglas Theodore «Doug» Pinnick es un músico estadounidense, mejor conocido por ser el bajista, vocalista y compositor de la banda de hard rock/metal progresivo King’s X.
En 1998, Pinnick confirmó su homosexualidad en una entrevista para el programa Regeneration Quarterly.
“Pensé para mis adentros: ‘Esta es una revista cristiana y estoy cansado de que me ridiculicen’”, relata Pinnick, de 66 años, sobre la razón por la que salió del armario durante esa conversación.
A raíz de la entrevista, «la industria y los fanáticos me trataron muy bien», dice Pinnick. “Nadie me dio ningún problema en absoluto.
He escuchado un par de comentarios en los últimos años, como video o algo, alguien dice algo realmente horrible sobre mí, y lo descarto.
Añade que mucha gente le expresó su apoyo, “especialmente el guitarrista Dimebag (Darrell Abbott) de Pantera. Se acercó y dijo: ‘Amigo, sabes que te amo. No me importa quien eres y te amamos ‘».
Pero Pinnick quedó devastado cuando su entonces gerente quiso enviar a Pinnick a un campamento de conversión.
«Todos en la banda se fueron», excepto Tabor y Gaskill, supieron que era gay, incluido un guitarrista que declaró que ya no podía ser el compañero de habitación de Pinnick porque «Dios le dijo que no podía dormir en la misma casa» con él. .
Si bien ser descubierto por su banda había sido la peor pesadilla de Pinnick, “lo mejor de todo fue cuando Ty y Jerry vinieron y dijeron: ‘Oye, no nos importa’”, dice. “Y hemos sido una banda durante casi 40 años. Respecto a la homofobia dentro del mundo del Metal, Pinnick comentó:
«Se da porque es un género mayoritariamente de hombres. Los chicos, cuando se juntan, hacen chistes sobre los gays y se llaman gays unos a otros en cuanto alguno hace algo femenino.
Los hombres sencillamente son muy brutales. Por ejemplo, vas a un baño y no escuchas una palabra, nadie se mira a la cara, y si a alguno se le ocurre mirar para abajo, a otro, puede acabar siendo golpeado.»
Nos han enseñado a ser homofóbicos. Es algo que llevamos dentro y como consecuencia, sobre todo los tíos, nadie sale del armario. Las chicas son más naturales, entra a un baño de ellas y las verás meando una frente a la otra.»
Mina Caputo
Mina Caputo es una cantante solista estadounidense, más conocida por liderar la banda de heavy metal Life of Agony.
En julio de 2011, anunció que comenzaría a vivir como mujer, diciendo que era lo que llevaba deseando toda su vida. Por un tiempo, se hizo llamar Keith Mina Caputo, para después llamarse Mina Caputo. Es lesbiana.
Cuando Mina Caputo, reveló en su cuenta de Twitter que era transgénero, lo hizo porque «necesitaba salvarse» a sí misma.
Años de ocultar su secreto la habían llevado al abuso del alcohol y la adicción a las drogas porque estaba «en la misión de morir».
Mina pasa a ser así la primera estrella abiertamente transgénero del heavy metal, formando parte del conjunto de artistas trans más importantes del escenario musical occidental actual.

Barrio Pobre: “Le dábamos prioridad al disco, tiene 10 canciones totalmente nuevas”, sobre su nueva producción “Transición”
Barrio Pobre es una banda de Rock y Rhythm and Blues, originaria del oriente de la Ciudad de México. Fundada y liderada por Mario Sánchez desde sus inicios en 2001. Sus ritmos son una mezcla de diferentes sonidos que les permitieron introducirse en el circuito del rock mexicano.
En este 2021 cumplen 20 años de trayectoria musical, actualmente la banda presenta su nueva grabación titulada “Transición”, misma que marca un entorno muy fresco de la nueva etapa que se vive en el mundo.
Esta nueva producción contiene 10 canciones inéditas, y platicamos con Mario San, la voz y guitarra de Barrio Pobre, y con Yoshi Da Silvva, baterista de la banda, al respecto de “Transición”, no te pierdas esta entrevista.
¿Qué nos cuentan sobre esta nueva canción “Transición”? ¿Cómo la trabajaron? ¿La hicieron antes de la pandemia?
M: Fue durante la pandemia, empezando todo iniciamos a trabajar con este proyecto, que viene llena de rock and roll, buena música, balada rítmica, con una temática nueva.
¿Cómo fue trabajar durante la pandemia? ¿Grabaron las canciones aparte o se reunieron?
M: Si nos reuníamos seguido, la composición de ciertos temas fue muy independiente. El estructurar una canción siempre es la base por principio de cuentas, en armar la armonía, en meter la letra, y darle un poco de armonía. Estos temas se les pasan a los muchachos y ellos prácticamente le meten los arreglos, por ejemplo Yoshi lo sabe, él que te cuente como fue. Yo por mi cuenta, fue el hecho de armar las canciones, componerlas y pasárselas a ellos para los arreglos.
Y: La verdad es que sí fueron meses de trabajo arduo, del trabajo en el cual realice una inversión de todo tipo, de tiempo y económico, estoy muy contento porque dentro de todo lo malo sacamos muchas cosas buenas, entonces preguntaban por ahí ¿cómo fue la creación de disco? En efecto, hubo muchas reuniones que tuvimos nosotros, porque bueno actualmente ya contamos con un estudio, obviamente con todas las medidas por todo lo de la pandemia y todo eso, nos reuníamos constantemente nosotros cuatro y pues bueno, si fueron días pesados, de verdad había días en los que trabajábamos 12 o 14 horas, nos encerrábamos y platicabamos, inclusive había días en los que no salíamos, y no sabíamos si comer o continuar, y le dábamos prioridad al disco, tiene 10 canciones totalmente nuevas, ya te imaginaras el hecho de estar nosotros ahí reunidos proponiendo ideas, cuerdas, escalas, en mi caso todas las bases rítmicas. Al final, concluimos con un nuevo sencillo. Ya empezamos a tener buenos frutos, lo vemos con nuestro público, con nuestra trayectoria de 20 años. La verdad es que si tenemos objetivos similares los 4, y queremos ver que historia tan bonita podemos marcar con esto que estamos haciendo.
¿Hubo algún tema para grabar en este nuevo disco que fuera complicado o alguna situación que obstaculizará la salida del material?
M: Yo tengo un poquito para contar de eso, hay una canción dentro de este disco que se llama “Engaño”, tiempo atrás la quería echar a andar y los arreglos que le hicieron los chicos, fueron fantásticos, esta canción tiene muchísimo tiempo queriendo arrancar entonces a mi se me había hecho un poco pesadito el no poderla culminar, y ahora que la grabamos si me gustó, fue mucho trabajo y marcar el compás de un blues, el adaptarnos, tanto la guitarras como las baterías, fue un trabajo maravilloso, y a fin de cuentas siento que esa canción fue una de las más pesaditas para mí, en cuanto a darle el sentido a ese tipo de ritmo que manejamos.
¿Cuánto duró aproximadamente la producción del disco desde que empezaron con las canciones hasta que tuvieron el máster, y el material como tal?
Y: Lo que pasa es que en este año tres meses, no solo tenemos este disco, ya producimos otro, y será sorpresa para nuestra gente, fueron meses de mucho trabajo pero la verdad estamos muy contentos de todo lo que se ha trabajado. Queremos comentar que ya tenemos otras grabaciones que serán sorpresa, próximamente lo verán reflejado en nuestras redes sociales. Con el disco de “Transición” nos llevamos entre 7 u 8 meses aproximadamente por mucho. Es un trabajo arduo porque fueron meses de mucho tiempo, pero todos estamos muy contentos por todo lo que se ha logrado.
¿Tienen algún tema favorito de esta producción?
Y: Claro, me he dado cuenta de los cuatro elementos que somos actualmente yo creo que cada quien tiene los suyos, a mi en lo personal me gustan tres canciones, las cuales son “A mil por hora”, “Esto es así” y “Regresa”, esas para mi son mis favoritas. Escucho el disco y lo reproduzco en spotify, si se ha notado un cambio de lo que Barrio Pobre habría traído como trayectoria y justamente eso se debe a la esencia de cada uno de nosotros, de cómo interpretamos las cosas.
M: Así que digamos un tema, un enfoque, que sea mi favorito no hay tal cual; toda canción es como un hijo los quieres igual; fíjate que es algo bien raro, desde hace un tiempo se me quitó la idea de enfocarme en un sólo tiempo, en esto hay algo muy raro, a veces tú le pones mucha dedicación a un tema y le inviertes todo, y desarropas las otras y resulta que esa canción no le gusta a la gente, y les gusta a la que menos tiempo le has invertido. Es algo que la experiencia me ha dado con el paso de los años, a últimas todos mis temas he intentado hacerlos de corazón y echarle muchas ganas, todos los temas son mis favoritos, porque son míos. Me gustan todos los arreglos que hicieron los muchachos.
¿Cómo van a celebrar estos 20 años de carrera artística?
M: Con una rica chela, no, andamos checando si ya dan viada a los eventos, esperamos festejarlos en algún toquín, estamos viendo cómo festejar de manera física estos 20 años; en caso de que no haya ese espacio pues andamos pensando en hacer alguna transmisión para el público.
¿Qué planes cancelaron por la pandemia?
M: ¡Hijoles! Fueron bastantes, fue mucho trabajo que se vino abajo, ha habido muchas cosas, la pandemia trajo muchas desestabilidad, el hecho de que nosotros pudiéramos adaptarnos a esta forma en todos los sentidos es muy difícil, pero mira la cuestión es que aquí seguiremos el trabajo que se canceló, los proyectos que se detuvieron, el poder de darle salida al festejo de los 20 años.
¿Recuerdan cuál fue su último evento en vivo antes de la pandemia?
Y: Yo no me recuerdo con exactitud, pero por ahí de Febrero.
M: Sí, yo tampoco me acuerdo.
Y: Lo que pasa es que hemos tenido eventos particulares, y no recuerdo con exactitud antes de que todo se viniera abajo.
¿Han realizado streamings?
Y: Sí, hace poco tuvimos uno, yo calculo que por ahí de mes y medio tuvimos un streaming. en el cual nos ayudó un gran amigo que es amigo de Mario, y transmitió desde su canal que se llama “El Canal del Blues”, y él fue quien nos ayudó con el streaming, estuvimos muy atentos y checando comentarios.Barrio Pobre está integrado por Mario San en la voz; Andreu Ramsés Tercer en el bajo, Matt Sullivan en la guitarra y Yoshi da Silva en la batería. Durante su trayectoria de dos décadas, cuentan con diez discos que los han colocado en una muy buena posición alrededor del movimiento rockero.

«Formamos Jikan’Key para música original, partimos de covers y después evolucionamos a originales», comenta Cristian Borgoño, bajista de la banda, sobre los inicios de Jikan’Key.
Jikan’Key es una banda chilena con influencias de J Rock y de J Pop, su propuesta es novedosa, su inspiración radica en las melodías y colores del pop-rock japonés. Un grupo de jóvenes que en un inicio tocaban covers y ahora componen su propia música. Cuentan con cuatro singles: “Contratiempo”, “Promesa de Invierno”, “Destino Cruel” y el más reciente “Águila”, que es el tema que están promocionando actualmente.
La banda está formada por Rocío Vera en la batería, Belén Tezini es la vocalista, Cristian Borgoño es bajista, Diego Wistuba en los teclados, Oscar Aravena es instrumentista y Benjamín Padilla está en guitarras, son los integrantes de Jikan’Key.
Platicamos con Cristian, bajista de la banda sobre el nuevo tema, la propuesta de la banda y cómo han trabajado durante esta pandemia.
¿Cómo está la banda actualmente? ¿Cómo han trabajado durante está pandemia?
C: La verdad ha sido muy difícil trabajar con la pandemia, porque los seis integrantes somos de comunas muy separadas, por lo menos una hora de viaje cada uno. Entonces estamos buscando alternativas online para seguir trabajando en nuestras canciones, porque reunirnos es imposible.
¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación de este nuevo single que es “Águila”?
C: Está grabación comenzó el año pasado antes de la pandemia, de hecho la alcanzamos a grabar la mayoría antes de que iniciara todo, teníamos la pista de grabaciones, el resto lo hizo cada uno desde sus casas. Y se terminó de editar, terminamos de mezclar este año, fue un trabajo bastante laborioso.
¿Qué significa este tema “Águila” para ustedes?
C: El tema trata de un conflicto interno, es como una persona que está en constante conflicto con sus propios sentimientos y pensamientos, entonces se ataca así mismo, que básicamente es como se podría sentir una persona encerrada en esta pandemia, estando contra él, totalmente ensimismado.
¿Qué esperan de este nuevo single?
C: La verdad esperamos que a la gente le guste, hemos trabajado bastante, es un tema muy antiguo de nosotros, uno de los primeros cuando empezamos a hacer música original y ha evolucionado bastante a lo que es ahora, de hecho duraba 7 minutos y ahora 5 minutos y algo. Esperamos que a la gente le guste, que es una banda que tiene variedad de género, no hacemos toda nuestra música igual, experimentamos, siempre y cuando suene como anime.
¿Cuándo fue la últimamente vez que se presentaron en un concierto en vivo?
C: Me parece que fue en 2019, en Santiago; fue para el lanzamiento de un disco comunitario con bastantes y distintas bandas chilenas, nosotros teníamos una canción ahí, esa fue el último show en vivo que dimos.
¿Ustedes han hecho algún concierto virtual en estos meses?
C: Estamos esperando, esperando para poder hacerlo hay que ensayar para eso, y es lo que no que podemos hacer. Santiago completo, está en cuarentena total.
¿Cómo los ha tratado la escena del J Rock, del J Pop en Chile?
C: Es bastante pobre si te soy honesto, sobre todo porque en las convenciones uno podía presentarse y también están detenidas, entonces la escena la estamos llevando al mundo digital y por suerte no ha ido mal, de hecho muy bien.
¿Cuáles fueron los planes que se cancelaron por la pandemia?
C: Muchos, videoclips, fotografías, teníamos bastantes presentaciones en vivo, incluso los ensayos y grabaciones de un disco completo. Tenemos ocho temas ahí, que no se están haciendo nada porque no podemos tocar. Y estamos buscando una forma de grabarlas y subirlas.
¿Cuáles son los planes para este año o el que viene?
C: Para este año tenemos planeado lanzar un maxi-single a mitad de año, con tres canciones nuevas, y a final de año lanzar un disco completo, un recopilatorio de los cuatro singles que tenemos más canciones nuevas, ese es nuestro panorama, ojalá podamos cumplirlo.
¿En qué momento decidieron formar la banda? ¿Cuándo fue que decidieron tocar juntos?
C: Esto es una historia bastante larga, empezó más o menos por el 2015, donde Rocío, la baterista, y yo nos conocimos a través de otros chicos, y formamos una banda de covers de anime, y estuvimos dos años así, la banda se separó, nosotros continuamos y nos reunimos con otros integrantes y formamos Jikan’Key para música original, partimos de covers y después evolucionamos a originales, más o menos en el 2019. Y así fue como todo inició con covers, nos gusta el anime y vamos a convenciones y ahora estamos con música propia.
¿Tienen influencia de algunos grupos de rock, de J rock o de anime?
C: Si, es variado, cada integrante tiene una influencia distinta, entonces utilizamos todo esto y de distintos animes, de hecho nuestra música está basada en openings de anime, y nos gusta que suenen así., y de cualquier género mientras que suena a opening, entonces tocamos cosas totalmente diversas, nuestras cuatro canciones son 4 estilos distintos.
